Not so Sweet

Big Sugar

If you regularly watch the news, you’ll see conflicting reports about sugar. Some organizations say it’s toxic, and one of the biggest health issues we face in America. While others say it’s part of a normal diet, and can be eaten in moderation. I happen to fall in the camp that sugar is bad.

More sugar and low quality

Americans today consume about 160 lbs of sugar each year.  This is a BIG change from the 2 lbs of sugar we consumed each year back in the early 1900’s. But the dangers of sugar wouldn’t be such a big debate if it weren’t for shady lobbyists who work for Big Sugar. They’ve taken a page right out of the tobacco playbook.

For example…

Did you know that some of the BIGGEST and most well known health organizations get funding from sugar and soda companies?

The American Heart Association does…

The American Diabetes Association does…

The Juvenile Diabetes Association does…

Think there’s a conflict of interest here?

I don’t think ANY organization that deals with heart disease or diabetes, should be aligned with sugar.

25 years from now that’s going to seem as crazy as when doctors were in ads for cigarettes.

What’s my point with all of this?

Many of these major health organizations do NOT have your best interest at heart. These organizations are simply a business that has to hit it’s numbers just like Microsoft or Apple does. From time to time, they DO put out some good research (good for them). But almost everything they do is influenced by drug companies, soda companies and the food industry. Which is why I always recommend taking what they say with a grain of salt. Ronald Reagan was famous for saying the scariest phrase is “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help you”. Well, those same words can be applied to a lot of these organizations as well.
